Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a common disorder that affects one in every ten women of reproductive age. The disorder is one of the leading causes of fertility problems in women, and many women do not even realize that they have it.

The cause of PCOS is a hormonal imbalance disorder in which the ovaries have multiple small cysts. Women with the disorder produce high amounts of male hormones called androgens. An increased level of androgen is known to cause interference in egg maturation preventing regular ovulation.

Insulin resistance increases the body’s insulin levels which impacts normal ovulation by preventing it altogether – or limiting the maturation process of the released egg. This directly affects our ability to conceive.

Women who are insulin resistant are also 4-5 times more likely to suffer a miscarriage (or multiple miscarriages), as PCOS creates imbalanced insulin levels which make it difficult for the embryo to attach properly to the uterus.

Women with PCOS may have the following problems:

• infertility due to lack of ovulation • recurrent miscarriages

• excessive body hair growth (hirsutism) due to an imbalance between hormones

• irregular menstrual cycles and heavy bleeding (cycles which are either less than 21 days or more than 35 days apart) due to lack of ovulation

• acne • obesity • type 2 diabetes

How We Can Help

FERTILITY TREATMENTS: Treatment for PCOS is different for each woman, depending on the symptoms and other factors. Typically, treatment is aimed at eliminating the symptoms of the disorder and restoring regular ovulation. Birth control pills and diabetes medication can help patients manage many PCOS symptoms. For women who wish to become pregnant, the first step of PCOS treatment is usually a course of fertility drugs aimed at stimulating ovulation.
