In moderate to extremely viscous samples there are 3 techniques used to decrease the extent of viscosity:
Chymotrypsin - An enzyme additive that aids in breaking down viscous samples. This technique is not covered by insurance and subsequently is paid for by the patient. ($25 fee)
18 gauge needle - Semen is drawn up through an 18 gauge needle and then expelled back into the specimen cup through the needle. This aids in breaking up areas of high viscosity and usually needs to be used in conjunction with the addition of sperm wash.
Sperm wash - Sperm wash can be added to the raw sample to dilute the specimen and aid the liquefying process.
* Men can also take vitamin C supplements daily to decrease viscosity.
