The Albany IVF andrology laboratory offers cryopreservation of semen as well as testicular/epididymal tissue and aspirates. All appointments for cryopreservation need to be scheduled with the lab.
Cryopreservation is a method used to store sperm for later use. The process of cryopreservation includes collection of semen or testicular/epididymal tissue adding a fluid to protect the sperm during the freezing process and concentrating the sperm sample to 0.5mL. The sperm is drawn up into a straw, the ends of the straw are closed and the sample is either cooled slowly by decreasing the temperature in a refrigerator or in liquid nitrogen vapors if the sample is fragile. The sample can also be cooled very fast by plunging it into a tank of liquid nitrogen which brings the temperature of the sample from room temperature to subzero temperatures within seconds. Once frozen, the sperm can be stored for an extended amount of time.
Unfortunately, not all patients are candidates for cryopreservation. During the cryopreservation process approximately 50% of the sperm will lose motility or die. Every patient will respond differently to the cryopreservation process. It is recommended that a test freeze and thaw is completed to ensure there is adequate sperm for the reproductive procedure.
In general, Albany IVF recommends fresh specimens for all reproductive services we render. But in some cases, the use of 1 fresh sample isn’t enough.
Patients that have timing issues with their spouse for intercourse or insemination can utilize cryopreservation to ensure sperm is available the day needed.
For patients who may have lower sperm counts but wish to have intrauterine insemination (IUI) several samples can be banked and then thawed for one IUI.
For patients that are planning on having a vasectomy, cryopreservation of several samples will ensure fertility for the future without a vasectomy reversal.
