Subcutaneous Injection

Giving a Subcutaneous injection:

  1. Wash hands.
  2. Reconstitute the medication as you have been directed.
  3. Choose an injection site as illustrated. Remember to rotate injection sites during the course of your therapy.
  4. Gently pinch up a small amount of tissue between the thumb and index finger of your non-dominant hand. Wipe the area with alcohol and allow this to dry. Holding the syringe at a 90 degree angle to your body, insert the needle and inject medication. Dispose needle into sharps container.

Slight burning with injection is normal. Notify a nursing staff member if you experience redness, swelling or a rash at the injection site.
