Lupron™ Microdose

Administering Lupron™:

Lupron is a premixed clear liquid which comes in a multidose vial. You will use the same vial of Lupron daily until all of the medication is used up.

There are 2 types of Lupron therapy, standard and microdose. You will be given a specific dose depending on your medication protocol. Both are administered subcutaneously. The medication doses and corresponding volume to measured on the syringe is as follows:

Microdose Lupron

40 micrograms (mcg) = 20 Units on the insulin syringe.

  1. Gather your supplies. You will need: Lupron, a insulin syringe, and an alcohol wipe.
  2. Wash your hands.
  3. Wipe the rubber stopper on the Lupron vial with the alcohol wipe.
  4. You will need to inject air into the vial. Do this by drawing back on the plunger, place the needle into the vial, and push air into the vial. Place at least as much air in, as you are taking liquid out.
  5. Turn the bottle upside down, draw out the appropriate dose of Lupron.
  6. Gently tap on the syringe to expel any air bubbles and proceed with your subcutaneous injection.

Special Considerations

MICRODOSE LUPRON is not commercially available, and cannot be purchased in most pharmacies. It is standard Lupron which is specially prepared by the pharmacist. Locally, Eckerd in East Greenbush and Fallons in Clifton Park will make Microdose Lupron, but need 24 - 48 hours notice. You may also mail order this medication at Freedom Drug (a brochure is available in the office).

You will generally have enough Lupron in one bottle for your entire cycle. However, you do have a refill on the prescription and may get a second bottle of medication if needed.

Remember to keep the tip of the needle (that's where the hole is) "under water". If the level of liquid falls below the tip of the needle, you will draw air back into your syringe. To avoid this, pull the needle partially out of the bottle.
