Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a visual inspection of the cervical canal and uterus through a magnifying surgical instrument called a hysteroscope or telescope. It is the gold standard for evaluating the uterus and is a minor surgical procedure. The advantage of hysteroscopy is that if the uterus has lesions, it can usually be treated at the same time as the diagnostic procedure.

Advanced Hysteroscopic Surgery

We use advanced hysteroscopic techniques to treat a variety of gynecologic problems including scarring in the uterus (Asherman’s Syndrome), uterine septum for recurrent pregnancy loss, uterine polyps, and submucous fibroid tumors of the uterus.

Often a special type of hysteroscope called a resectoscope is required for some of these procedures. Resectoscopy is surgically more risky than standard hysteroscopy because the instruments often require introducing a special amino acid into your uterus. Over-absorption of this amino acid can be risky. Discuss the risks and benefits of advanced hysteroscopic techniques with your physician before deciding on this surgery.

We perform advanced hysteroscopic techniques in an ambulatory surgery setting and recovery is rapid, with most patients experiencing vaginal bleeding as the only major side effect.
