D&C — dilation and curettage — is a minor surgical procedure in which we dilate the cervix and insert a thin, spoon-shaped instrument to remove material from the internal lining of the uterus. A suction instrument is also introduced in most cases to assist in a more complete uterine evacuation.
D&C is one of the most common surgical procedures and is typically used to treat miscarriages. It may also be performed in the non-pregnant state, especially in the evaluation and treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding. It is most commonly combined with hysteroscopy in these cases. Complications are rare but may include infection, bleeding and uterine perforation.
